A Surprising Confession
Silver
âHow are you not tired?â
Silver stopped pacing mid-stride and mid-sentence when she saw Sunny press her forehead to her knees and drag a furred blanket over her hunched shoulders.
Sheâd been talking non-stop since the Caillochi escorted them back to her room. But who could blame her, really? She had just learned the old stories were true and had talked to the queen of Caillochâs childrenâwho werenât myths but actual, living beings with air in their lungs and eyes that shone like lanterns in the dark.
She already knew the blood of the first people still flowed in the veins of many Hagolans, and she wasnât special simply because she hadnât inherited Vamortan traits. But still, to know her features werenât a misfortune or flaw, but the sign of her blood ancestry, was uplifting. Validating. Andâ
Magic was real. It was really real. As if the incident in the forest wasnât enough proof, now there was no room for doubting. Magic was real and she had somehow been born with the ability to see it. Thus far, all she had was magical sight, but perhaps it could be honed and refined. Maybe she could even learn to manipulate and use it.
But for what? The possibilities must extend far past healing, which she could do with herbs and her physicianâs training. To call on the essence of magicâ¦what delights might that bring forth? Sheâd have to talk to the queen again. Ask her more about her ancestry, about the history of the Caillochi, all of the things not in human books.
âSorry, itâs just Iâm so excited. Do you realize what it means? That Caillochâs descendants exist and are living freely here? This could change everything.â
âOr,â Sunny countered, âit could change nothing, because Markus is still on his way to Theros and the Vamortans are starving for a fight. Your princess may be a hostage to a man who has dangerous people in his pocket and maybe even allies from a different world entirelyâone that until now we thought was a fairy tale. Heâs still plotting against Sol, who doesnât know a thing about anything and will probably be too shocked and pointlessly diplomatic to stop him. Markus already has halfâor moreâof the council on his side andâ¦â
Silver sat beside her on the stone bed and lay a pale hand over her knee. It was supposed to be a comforting gesture, but Sunny inhaled sharply and moved away as if the touch had burned her.
âAnd the queen said swaying the council would be temporary,â Silver continued. âIf we can understand more about what Goodwyn told us, maybe we can identify who Markus is working for and stop them. We can prevent war without even bothering with the council, and when we reach Sul Galen, weâll speak with the high king about how to help Vamorta.â
Sunny slumped back against the wall. With her height and musculature, she took up most of the bed, even curled up. Silver concealed a smile over her melodrama. The heroic dragon slayer of Sul Galen, languishing beneath a fur blanket.
